Becton has been at the forefront in
environmental and ecological sustainability and energy and water
efficiency in all of its projects.
Becton was a foundation member of the of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Victoria’s Energy Smart Building program. As testimony to its leadership role in energy efficiency, Becton won the inaugural 2000 Energy Smart Builder Award for its, resort-style Classic Residences development in Brighton. The project, officially recognised by SEAV as the then largest energy efficient development in Australia, sought a minimum four-star energy rating with many residences achieving five-star.
As long ago as 1999, Becton commissioned a comprehensive and independent review of energy and environmental issues to identify opportunities to achieve the best possible, cost-effective environmental outcomes to improve the quality of lifestyle for owners, residents and employees in Becton projects.

Becton’s aims in environmental sustainability is to:
- achieve a mandatory 5 stars (and in some cases 5.5 or 6 star) energy rating but aim for the maximum five star rating in all of its residential projects, so long as commercial sustainability is achieved.
- achieve a mandatory 5 stars (and in some cases 5.5 or 6 star) star rating under the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating Scheme (ABGRS) or the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) in commercial projects, thereby commiting to a performance-based, environmental measurement rating tool.
- enhance and promote debate, discussion and knowledge within the Becton community of the global, national and local significance of environmental sustainability on the built environment.
- encourage and educate the community at large to better understand the built environment by providing the addresses to web sites of statutory and other bodies relating to residential and commercial environmental sustainability measures, including www.seav.vic.gov.au, www.seda.nsw.gov.au, www.deh.gov.au, www.gbcaus.org, www.greenhouse.gov.au, www.abgr.com.au, www.nabers.com.au
